A division of Salco Products that started small a decade ago is now having a big impact, not only with external customers but also within the Stucki family of companies. The Regulatory Compliance Group (RCG) is a business unit of Salco that delivers highly technical, compliance-based services to its partners in the transportation field and other industries.
“Our fellow companies at Stucki are definitely among those partners,” said TOM DELAFOSSE, senior vice president of quality and regulatory compliance. “We have the experience and technical expertise to help our colleagues understand and adhere to all federal regulations, industry standards and even individual customer requirements,” he said. RCG’s services include quality assurance program development, auditing, nondestructive testing training, metallurgy, car inspection, welder training, procedure development and regulatory guidance.
Tom joined Salco in 2016 to improve the company’s regulatory and compliance capabilities and build a business unit that would provide consulting and training services for outside customers – a part of the business that has grown significantly over the years.
“We’re known for our quality of service and we routinely help our customers perform at a level that places them at the top of their industries,” said MATT GROVE, who joined Salco in 2019 and is now vice president of regulatory compliance. “We’re committed to helping Stucki improve quality and achieve service excellence, both externally and internally.”
According to RICH POTJE, Stucki’s vice president of engineering and chief engineer, having RCG as an internal resource is like having a team of experts on call. “I can go to them with a compliance-related issue and they’ll let me know what rules govern it and what steps should be taken, which helps us make an informed decision on how best to move forward,” he said. “From a liability and risk management standpoint, they keep us, our customers and the public safe and compliant,” he continued. “They’re a tremendous resource.”
In addition to quality assurance and compliance support, RCG’s list of services includes engineering support, car inspection and NDT and welding support. “They recently provided Seco Machine with NDT training of employees for axle inspection,” said HOWARD DAVIES, corporate quality assurance manager. “Employees performing those inspections are required to be tested and certified, and RCG handled that in addition to the training,” he said. “They did an excellent job.”
MIKE FAUST, manager of continuous improvement at American Industries, said the RCG’s capabilities are an ideal complement to Stucki’s ongoing emphasis on eliminating waste and building a culture of continuous improvement. “For example, RCG has been rewriting our welding procedures and establishing company-wide standards so everyone performs the same tasks the same way,” he said. “Their knowledge and expertise in a broad range of categories have streamlined our operations and made a big difference for American Industries.”
Both Matt and Tom said having an internal resource like RCG offers Stucki some clear advantages. “For example, when we do an audit of one of our fellow Stucki companies, it’s as much a training session for them as anything, to help them be the best in their industries,” said Matt. “We want to support the culture of continuous improvement at Stucki and hold ourselves accountable to achieve our goals and desired results.” Tom agreed, and said RCG is in an ideal position to provide that support. “We’re here, we’re in-house, we have the expertise and we’re willing and eager to help,” he said. “It’s the definition of win-win.”
