We’re seeking a dynamic Director of Operations for our Birmingham Rail & Locomotive businesses in Bessemer and Lipscomb, AL. This person will provide strategic and operational leadership across the facilities, driving performance, culture, safety, quality, and continuous improvement. This role guides production, scheduling, staffing, and cost management while developing leaders and ensuring consistent execution of company goals and operational excellence.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
• Provide leadership, establish strategic direction, build a high-performance culture, and drive the organization to exceed company objectives through continuous improvement.
• Lead and provide operational oversight of the Lipscomb and Bessemer facilities providing input and planning support for the local teams.
• Lead and motivate teams to deliver on long-term organizational strategy and short-term operational and budgetary requirements.
• Develop leaders and expand growth opportunities as part of a succession planning strategy.
Operations Management
• Manage operations costs to meet or remain below standard cost targets.
• Actively participate in the SIOP process to achieve on-time delivery expectations.
• Ensure production orders are opened and closed accurately and in a timely manner.
• Oversee and guide the development and execution of the production schedule.
• Provide direction on inventory and material planning to fulfill production requirements.
• Monitor and drive performance against key KPIs such as on-time delivery, productivity, throughput, and efficiency.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
• Uphold and enforce all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Proactively ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, reflecting safety as a core value.
• Drive quality initiatives to ensure only products of the highest quality and safety are delivered to customers.
People & Culture
• Partner with Human Resources to strengthen recruitment, training, workforce development, and retention programs.
• Coach and mentor supervisory and staff personnel to enhance their capability and performance.
• Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations Management, Business, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive operations leadership experience in a manufacturing environment; rail, heavy industrial, or metal fabrication experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in operations management, production planning, and cost control.
• Strong background in Lean, Continuous Improvement, or similar methodologies.
• Proven ability to lead and develop multi-level teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with ERP systems (SAP strongly preferred).
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
